What is a Private Pilot Certificate?
A Private Pilot Certificate (PPL) is the most common pilot certification and your first major milestone in aviation. It gives you the legal authority to fly an airplane for personal travel, recreation, and adventure — and opens the door to advanced ratings like Instrument and Commercial.

FAA requirements for your PPL
To earn your Private Pilot Certificate, the FAA requires you to meet these minimums. Most students complete training in 65–85 hours total.
Be at least 17 years old
Read, speak, write, and understand English
Hold a valid FAA medical certificate
Pass the FAA Private Pilot written knowledge test
40 hours total flight time (20 with instructor, 10 solo)
5 hours solo cross-country flight time
Solo cross-country of 150nm with full-stop landings at 3 points
3 solo takeoffs and full-stop landings at a towered airport
3 hours cross-country, 3 hours night, 3 hours instrument flight training
Pass the FAA practical test (checkride) with a Designated Pilot Examiner
Ground school
All students are encouraged to use the Pilot Institute online ground school. It’s well-structured, includes practice tests, and comes with a written test endorsement — so we can focus our time together on actually flying.
