What is an Instrument Rating?
An Instrument Rating (IR) allows you to fly in clouds, fog, and low-visibility conditions that would ground a VFR-only pilot. It’s the next step after your Private Pilot Certificate and one of the most valuable ratings you can earn — making you a safer, more capable, and more versatile pilot.

FAA requirements for your Instrument Rating
You must hold a Private Pilot Certificate before beginning Instrument Rating training. Here are the FAA minimums:

50 hours minimum total PIC cross-country time

10 hours total PIC cross-country in an airplane

40 hours minimum actual or simulated instrument time
✓
15 hours of instrument flight training with a CFII in an airplane
✓
3 hours of instrument flight training in the last 2 calendar months before the checkride
✓
One 250nm instrument cross-country with an approach at each airport and 3 different types of approaches
✓
Pass the FAA Instrument Rating written knowledge test
✓
Pass the FAA Instrument Rating practical test (checkride)
